Architect and artist Doug Michels, perhaps best known as a member of the artist collective Ant Farm, died last Thursday in Australia while on a whale-viewing trip. Among other projects, Ant Farm designed and built the famous Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, and shot the seminal video Media Burn, in which a 1959 Cadillac convertible was driven through a wall of burning TV sets.Michels’ architectural projects included a stint with Philip Johnson (it was often told that the spotlight on top of Houston’s Transco Tower was Michels’ idea). He also designed the House of the Century with Ant Farm, and conceived Project Blue Star, a space station involving a giant sphere of water populated by dolphin astronauts.A major Ant Farm retrospective is scheduled to open in January of 2004 at the Berkeley Art Museum.
