The current MFAH show of Corcoran Gallery paintings reminds us that there were just as many second-rate works being made stateside in the 19th century as there were in the old countries. That said, the William Harnett dead chicken alone is worth the price of admission, as is Marsden Hartley’s Berlin Abstraction and the big ta-da Niagra by Church. Wear your platforms, though: for some inexplicable reason, they’ve installed this thing at NBA height on the walls.
