In its piece about the Norton Simon’s great-looking photography exhibition, the LA Times mentions big photography collections (MoMA, 25,000; SFMoMA, 12,000; LACMA, 8,000) but fails to mention the 22,000 we have here at the MFAH, amassed (and continuing to amass) by curator Anne Tucker, to say nothing of the 30,000 at the Amon Carter (a collection with includes the now-famous Richard Avedon series on people of the American West, which the Carter commissioned in 1979). Both museums always have photography of some sort on view (currently the Carter is showing the first wartime photographs ever made, of the Mexican War; and one of the real treats, always, at the MFAH is the stairwell landing down by the Brown Theater, where they hang new photography acquisitions).
