The December 2, 7 & 14 screenings of The Cool School at MFAH are not-to-be-missed for Houstonians interested in the rich early life of Walter Hopps, the Menil's founding director (the 12/2 screening is FREE and followed by Q & A with the film's cowriter and producer, Kristine McKenna). Hopps co-founded LA's legendary Ferus Gallery in the late 50s, and in this film you can see the young wildasses get arrested for obscenity, start Ed Ruscha and Robert Irwin, among others, on their way, and generally shake up the till-then-stagnant LA scene!!!
