Displaying a stiffly literal turn of mind, the City of Houston has comissioned eight new public art pieces for 2009: In the traffic circle outside the proposed WaterWorks museum, Donald Lipski has made a sculpture using seven spouting bathtubs; at the Sabine Pump Station, Matthew Geller has made a sculpture of water pipe; at the airport: aerial photographs of Houston in fused glass by Gordon Huether, and at the mounted police/animal service facility in North Houston, carousel horses by Sharon Engelstein.
The other four works are less obviously thematic: Koryn Rolstad will make a tree-themed artwork for the newly constructed Northeast Multi-Service Center. Reginald Adams is doing a mosiac for the Kashmere Multi-Service Center. Amy Baur and Brian Boldon will create a glass-art beacon for the interior of the Southeast Division Police Station. Jim Hirschfield and Sonya Ishii will sheathe two Terminal E columns with “beads” at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
