In a revised version of the economic stimulus bill recently passed by the House of Representatives, funding for museums, theaters and art centers has been restored- but rest assured, NO money will be forthcoming for aquariums, zoos, golf courses and swimming pools. The original amendment, proposed by Tom Coburn, Republican senator from Oklahoma ("the state of creativity") would have excluded museums as well, but made up for it with vivid imagery of the "zero-gravity chairs, big screen televisions, beautification, rotating pastel lights, and dry heat saunas." the amendment was supposed to quash. The $50 million for the NEA survived intact.
