The Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce can’t afford the $50,000 it takes to keep El Paso’s giant star alight, and hopes to push the job into the public sector by having the city or county government do it. Built in the 1940s by El Paso Electric Co., the star, in the Franklin Mountains, was originally lighted only at Christmas, but went year-round in the 1990’s.
