Plein air painter Rackstraw Downes, a part-time Texan who spends half his year painting in Marfa and Presidio, got a MacArthur Foundation grant of $500,000 this year. Terrie Sultan, formerly of the University of Houston’s Blaffer gallery, now at the Parrish Museum, Easthampton, NY, is organizing a survey show of his work to open there next year. In addition to selecting the MacArthur Fellows, The MacArthur foundation works to defend human rights, advance global conservation and security, make cities better places, and understand how technology is affecting children and society.
