While looking for materials with novel electronic properties, scientists at Oregon State University have stumbled on a new, stable, non-toxic, intensely blue pigment. The chemical, an esoteric mixture of manganese, yttrium and indium oxides, is expensive, (indium is useful in flat panel TV screens and prices have soared in the past couple of years to nearly $800 per kilogram) but the researchers are hopeful they can fix it.
