Cynthia Woods Mitchell, patron of the arts and historical preservationist, died Sunday morning, December 27; she was 87. Mitchell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2002. In addition to naming The Woodlands, Mitchell was a patron of the arts, supporting the University of Houston arts center bearing her name, the Houston Symphony , Ballet, and Grand Opera. Her family restored 17 iron-front buildings in downtown Galveston. Her funeral is private, but The Houston Symphony is scheduled to play a special concert celebrating her life onl April 29 at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands.
