The Brownsville Herald outlines the struggle for survival of the beset Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts in the post-funding Texas arts landscape. Where once the museum got $219,000 in city cultural funding, it’s now got $50,000. The museum is struggling with debt taken on in the palmy days of 2006, when the museum built itself $3.1 million new home. It’s former director, Barry T. Horn, was murdered in 2009. Marcela Hinojosa, the new Executive director has been on the job for two months; the museum is running with a skeleton crew, it’s utility bills paid by the city. Nevertheless, the BMFA soldiers on, hosting the upcoming “La Casa Azul de Frida,” featuring facsimilies of documents sealed in Frida Kahlo’s Mexico City bathroom for 50 years!
