The Arcata, California, Kinetic Sculpture Race finishes today, amid reports of high winds and tough going. In this venerable (since 1969) “triathlon of the art world” event all-terrain human-powered art sculptures race over road, water, mud and sand every Memorial Day weekend, with typically “art-car” campiness and hijinks. It’s catching: the 13th annual Kinetic Sculpture Race in Baltimore took place on May 7!

I wish we would do kinetic racing here (although anybody that jumps a manually pedaled kinetic sculpture in the Bayou is bound to come out with some fun flesh eating disease). When I worked at the American Visonary Art Museum in Baltimore we had a kinetic sculpture race every year, and the staff at AVA<M participated as a team. I have to say it was some of the most fun I have ever had in my life.
