Appeals appear to be going nowhere in the copyright infringement lawsuit between photographer Patrick Cariou and wealthy appropriation artist Richard Prince and his even wealthier mega-dealer, Larry Gagosian. After Cariou won a judgment against the arch-appropriator in March, works in Prince’s Canal Zone series (some sold for upwards of $2 million) were collected and stored away from public view (the judicial system’s a little behind the times- the images are easy to find on the internet) possibly to be destroyed unless another settlement is reached between the two artists.
