A 2,000-year-old statuette of the Greek goddess is too hot for the San Antonio Airport: an image of “Aprodite Emerging from the Sea” advertising the San Antonio Museum of Art’s exhibition “Aprodite and the Gods of Love” was censored from three venues in San Antonio, creating a micro-scandal and a lot of national publicity.
SAMA Director Katie Luber played it straight: “I think it actually is kind of a wonderful spotlight on the show — that it did incite such great feelings of passion and anxiety,” she told KENS TV. Apparently the provocative goddess is part of the museum’s end-of-year “sex sells” theme: other shows on view include “Adad Hannah: Intimate Encounters” and “Love in Three Capitals,” a show of Japanese erotic prints.
It’s a global strategy: advertisements for the Leopold Museum’s exhibition “Naked Men,” which features three nude soccer players, is causing a complementary furor in Vienna.
