The City of Austin’s new African American Cultural & Heritage Facility, at 912 E. 11th Street, opens with a community celebration on March 1 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Facility includes a new building, restoration of the Dedrick-Hamilton house (a historic structure which was home to the family of one of the first freed slaves in Travis County) and a mosaic mural by Houston artist Reginald Adams.
In 2006 voters supported a General Obligation bond referendum that provided funding to create three cultural facilities for minority populations, Hispanic, Asian, and African American. The City Council allocated $550,000 of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus) funds to the Heritage Facility Project.
