The Houston Arts Alliance has posted the names of the 24 recipients of it’s 2013 individual artist grants on its website. Chosen from among a field of just 79, the 24 winners come in two sizes: winners of $5000 in the emerging artist category are, Caroline “Cary” Reeder, Danielle Fanfair, Jyoti Gupta, Lance Flowers, and Stacey Summers. Winners of $10,000 grants for established artists are Alexander Parsons, Bradford Thomason, Christa M. Forster, Francesca Fuchs, Francine Di, H.J. Bott, Hillerbrand+Magsamen, Jason Woods, Joan Son, Lacy M. Johnson, Mark Nelson, Michael Crowder, Michael Taylor, Richard Carey Ford, Robert Hodge, Robert Pruitt, Sherese Campbell, Tish Stringer, and Zubair Al Awady.
The grant money comes from hotel occupancy tax funds, and is aimed at making Houston a more desirable place to visit by sponsoring public projects by local artists. Just by coincidence, this tends to support a community of working artists, something every city needs.

Congratulations to all, particularly my good friend Mark Nelson.
Congratulations to the winners!
Congratulations everyone!
Congratulations to all grantees – but especially to H.J. Bott – math in all its forms are more and more essential these days!!! Gotta love an excellent math brain!!!
First, may I thank the HAA reviewing panels for selecting my proposal with the other recipients.
Hopefully my proposition will be able to help erase some of the four-letter word stigma of MATH, demonstrating how intuitively ART can actually ease the imagined “pain” through the use of very fundamental perspective viewing exercises and graphically illuminating my discovery of the Displacement-of-Volume (DoV) System Concepts from forty years ago.
The inherent DoV System tiling modules also explore most basic clichéd archetypes while concurrently delving into many 2-D & 3-D geometric forms and other scientific percepts and introductory guidelines.
These “essentials” are proposed to become available on DVDs though the professional photo and cinematic assistance of Shau Lin Hon. The first public presentation will be at Houston’s Artist’s Collective, late Spring 2014; and maybe thereafter, Middle School teachers in varied disciplines, and ARTISTS that say they hate MATH, will at least acquaint themselves of some of this exposition’s preliminary formulaic elements for MATH to become a joyous everyday experience.
