Submissions are due at the end of next week for the 16th annual Stars of Texas juried art exhibition. Started in 1999, the exhibition has grown from a one-week local exhibition to a two-week “truly regional competition,” according to their website. With a name like “Stars of Texas” and $7,000 in prize awards (plus a Salon des Refusés exhibition, a Paint-Off competition, and a Digital Photography Shoot-Off competition!), it sounds like fun.
Open to all Texas residents over 18, the show takes place in Brownwood (population 19,288) and entrants are required to drop off actual artwork on January 24-25. Brownwood is located almost equidistant from Dallas, Austin, and Waco; at two-plus hour drives from these areas, the exhibition host’s idea of “truly regional” may be a bit limited. But adventurous Texas artists may want to go for it—this year’s juror is Benito Huerta (associate art professor at UT Arlington, director of the UTA art gallery, and co-founder/now director emeritus of Artlies, the Texas contemporary art journal) who just may mix up the stars a bit.
