If you are in an area that hasn’t been hit by the horrible weather in the past couple of days, count yourself lucky, because the flooding and storms have whipped across wide areas of Texas. Record-breaking rain has hit the Panhandle, Central Texas and, last night, caused havoc throughout the Houston area.
Wimberley sustained some of the most damage along the Blanco River—nearly 70 homes in Wimberley were taken off of their foundations. Two whole families who were vacationing together are still missing. For a first-person account of Wimberley terror, posted by the Austin American-Statesman, go here. The residents and artists known to Glasstire seem to be safe and relatively dry, but much electricity and phone lines are down, so anyone with more information, please let us know.
Houston, for the most part, already crested overnight, but many areas are still flooded. Schools are closed today and city officials are asking people to stay home and off the streets. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston posted this announcement on its website: “The MFAH is closed today due to transportation disruptions around Houston,” and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s sites says, “Due to the extreme weather, we are closed today… Stay safe Houston!” But most other museums have no updates. Whether they plan to open today or whether they can’t (or haven’t thought to) access their sites is not known.
But it’s not an art day. Stay safe, assess the damage, and think good thoughts about the missing!
