Over the last twenty years, even major airports entered the art-commissioning action. Smithsonian Magazine published its list of ‘Nine American Airports for Art Lovers,’ and one major Texas airport made the list: Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. It’s a really good airport, we must confirm.
Much of DFW’s art is in its newer Terminal D. Dennis Oppenheim’s Crystal Mountain and Christopher Janney’s Circling get special mention on Smithsonian’s list, but let’s not forget Tom Orr’s massive untitled 2005 sculpture that greets you from the escalators, or Nancy Lamb’s excellent terrazzo floor piece. A big list of the art on view is here and it’s truly impressive: there are 32 artists represented in all.
Miami was #1 (it actually hosts a series of rotating exhibits) and #4’s Denver International’s big Blue Mustang by the late great Luis Jiménez is hard to top, too. See the slideshow here.
