Abandoned spaces-as-art-venues abound. On the heels of our announcement of the South Plateau Adobe Ruin in Marfa, another dilapidated house-turned-exhibition space opened in a Houston suburb. Commissioned by Seeds of Sharpstown, the project transforms a decrepit home into an installation by artist Alexander Squier. Taking a page out of the outsider artist handbook (we’re looking at you, Cleveland Turner), many of the objects Squier found within the house were reappropriated and became part of the installation. According to a Houston Public Media spot, the goal of the project is bring new visitors (who like art) out to the ‘burbs. This sentiment is understandable: We, too, like the idea of art outside the loop.
The show, Remnants of the Past, Visions of the Future, is on view through January 3, 2016.
