The University Galleries in the Texas State University School of Art & Design in San Marcos have recently announced their participation in Window | National, a series of exhibitions developed by North Carolina artist Dawn Roe. The goal of Window is to challenge concepts of authorship and originality by presenting works that use archival materials as their primary medium—hence the terms “re-production” and “re-presentation” in the project’s subtitle. (No word yet on whether Richard Prince is participating.)
The flagship Window space is a storefront window in Asheville, NC, which hosts ongoing installations, including, last year, San Antonio photographer Mark Menjivar (whose Luck Archive was published as a book by Trinity University Press). The spirit of the Window project is decidedly anti-establishment: their mission statement states that “window does not fetishize process or material and disavows the treatment of artworks as precious and unique” and “window does not promote commerce.”
Last year, Window founder Roe received a grant from Rollins College to create three Window exhibitions that will appear simultaneously (in January, May and September), at the following locations:
Henco Reprographics – Asheville, NC
The Olin Library at Rollins College – Winter Park, FL
Wayne State University Art Department – Detroit, MI
Normandale Community College – Bloomington, MN
Texas State University – San Marcos, TX
Passages Bookshop – Portland, OR
The exhibitions will include installations by Claudia Weber, Joe Hamilton, and Joe Yorty. More details here.
