The networking platform Contemporary Performance has posted an announcement for the second year of an unusual artist residency program. Twenty-Three Days at Sea: A Travelling Artist Residency is taking submissions for this on-the-move floating residency, which is organized by Access Gallery (Vancouver) in partnership with Burrard Arts Foundation, and makes its way on several freighters from Canada to Shanghai between June and September of this year. It’s open to all artists “working in any and all media.”
Twenty-Three Days at Sea looks for emergent artists to create new work while in residence on the ship and “imposes specific conditions and constraints (the strictures of the port; the solitude of the freighter cabin; the expanse of the open sea) that will, in turn shape artists’ ideas and work.” The work is shown at Access Gallery after the trip. Artists are encouraged to propose projects that touch on ideas around sea travel and/or the shipping industry.
Word to the wise: No internet on this ship. Nada. That’s either heaven or hell, depending on the artist.
The deadline is Feb. 15. For more info, go here.
