Even artists have to pay taxes and it’s often more complicated than other people’s taxes. Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA) wants to help. On February 8 at 6:30pm, TALA will offer a free workshop at Project Row Houses called “Tax Preparation for Artists.” CPA Kathy Ploch will cover the following topics:
- What it means to be self-employed/independent contractor
- What the self-employment tax is and how it is paid
- Keeping records of income and expenses
- Which expenses are deductible
- What is needed to prepare your taxes
- Estimated tax payments
- Business versus hobby rules
- Sales tax and employment tax
- Home office expenses
If you have bigger problems than taxes, TALA is offering 30-minute consultations at Fresh Arts the following evening (February 9 at 6:30pm). The consultations are free for those with an annual household income of under $50,000, but legal issues and questions must be related to work in the creative fields. Registration is required.
