It was announced last week that San Antonio artist Cruz Ortiz was selected to create artwork in support of Hillary Clinton’s bid for the presidency. This comes months after Ortiz was asked to create work for the Texas Democratic Convention. Ortiz’s piece for Clinton, an animated flag with the word “ganas” (desire) swaying under right-angled stripes, is currently featured on the candidate’s campaign website. A bit about Ortiz’s design:
Ortiz wanted to create a bold flag that would reflect America’s rich diversity. His incorporated meso-American design principles, along with patterns developed by Native American and African American quiltmakers. The word “ganas”—Spanish for ‘want’ or ‘desire’’—is superimposed on the flag as a symbol of our shared desire to achieve the American dream.
Other artists asked to create work for the campaign include Carrie Mae Weems, Jenny Holzer and Cat Mazza. For more info on Ortiz, please go here.
