My first visit to James Turrell’s Twilight Epiphany Skyspace on the campus of Houston’s Rice University happened last Saturday. Though some of our neighbors were still without power and water, it was the first full day of good weather and sunshine after Houston (and much of Texas) dug out of the event that was Winter Storm Uri.
I’ve seen pictures of the Turrell posted by friends, and though I’ve lived in Houston for longer than a year now, I hadn’t yet gone out to see this work. One of 85 skyworks by Turrell, Twilight Epiphany was a gift from Rice alumna Suzanne Deal Booth. Booth worked for the artist as a graduate student at New York University, and assisted with Turrell’s first Skyspace at MoMA PS1 in New York City, according to Rice Public Art.
The outdoor public work is free and open to visitors Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10AM to 5PM, and for me was a welcome relief from a cold and dark week.
