ClayHouston, a nonprofit organization that supports ceramic arts in Houston and beyond, has announced an open call for their annual Award for Texas BIPOC Ceramic Artists.
The organization established this award in 2020 in response to ongoing issues facing communities of color, such as systemic racism and COVID-19 (which has been shown to disproportionately affect these communities). Through the award, ClayHouston aims to increase access to the field of ceramics by Texas artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC).
Earlier this year, the organization debuted works by recipients of the inaugural award at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. The 2021 awardees were Jihye Han, Tammie Rubin, and Earnest Snell.
For 2022, ClayHouston will award $1,200 to one winner in each of the two categories below:
Emerging: Self-identifying as a student and/or early career. Must be 18 years or older. Formal training or academic background is not required.
Mid-Career and Beyond: Non-Emerging. Self-identifying as mid-career or established. Must be 18 years or older. Formal training or academic background is not required.
Awardees will be chosen by a panel of jurors which includes Virginia Felix, Raheleh Filsoofi, and Gabo Martinez. Applications are due March 21, 2022 and awards will be announced on May 2, 2022. Apply here.
