Blanton Museum of Art Announces Lineup for Upcoming “SoundSpace” Program

The Blanton Museum of Art, a collecting institution that is on The University of Texas at Austin’s campus, has announced that next month it will host the tenth season of SoundSpace, a program that combines art and music in the museum.

While SoundSpace performances have typically been held in-person, the upcoming program, which is scheduled for April 21 at 6:30 PM, will be completely online, and is comprised of, per the museum, “pre-recorded performances in the museum galleries, followed by a live Q&A with performers.” For the event, Steve Parker, who is the program’s Artistic Director, selected eight local and national artists and musicians to respond to and converse with artworks in the Blanton’s colleciton. Local artists and musicians involved in the program include Michael Anthony Garcia, AKIRASH, José Villalobos, and Graham Reynolds.

In a statement, Mr. Parker, talked about the history of the event, saying, “For more than ten years, the Blanton’s SoundSpace has transformed the museum into a site for creativity and exploration. I’m especially excited to bring that experience online for the first time—and to transport viewers to the gallery walls through a combination of visual, performance, and sound art. We’re really going to give them a unique show.”

Sound artwork continues to be an important part of the Blanton’s focus — currently, the museum is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation which will include an outdoor space dedicated to sound art.
